Michigan isn’t known for its red wines, although I much prefer them to that of the California variety. The flavors that come out of Northern Michigan seem much more bold and filling. This isn’t a very bold red wine, nor is it especially flavorful, but it is plentiful in grocery stores and easy to drink. It’s a bit too sweet to have with a meal, but I like to open a bottle while I’m cooking or to use in a sauce or to get the crust off the bottom of a pan when I’ve been cooking white onions and chicken for a savory mix of flavors that turns a regular chicken breast into something more enticing.

Leelanau Cellars is a nice winery in Omena, Michigan. They’re family owned and operated, and see over 40,000 visitors a year. They’ve got wine in cans and are most often known for their Witches Brew Spice Wine, Great Lakes Table Red, and Winter White, although they’ve got a lot more. including a series of fruit wines, the Lakeshore Collection, and the Tall Ship Collection.

The post Leelanau Cellars Great Lakes Red first appeared on Great Lakes Experiences .

Located just north of Harrisville, Michigan in Alcona County, Sturgeon Point Lighthouse, built in 1870, sits on the Northeastern Coast of Michigan on Lake Huron. There are many lighthouses in Michigan, all with their own unique stories. The lighthouse is still in operation, and has been in continuous operation since 1869, however it has been automated since 1941. It is a shame that there aren’t more manned lighthouses in Michigan. I understand that it’s a hassle and less efficient, but there would be something cool about having crusty old lighthouse keepers making sure that boats don’t sail into the shallows that ride along the edge of the Great Lakes. If you want to climb this lighthouse, it costs $3. The tower is 70 feet, 9 inches tall and is 16 feet in diameter at its base.

In 1982, the Alcona Historical Society took over control of the lighthouse and began to restore it, repairing the damage caused by vandals over the years and putting on a fresh coat of paint. Due to budgetary constraints, this work was all done by volunteers. Sturgeon Point Lighthouse contains 3.5 order Fresnel lens made in Paris, France. The Fresnel lens still exists in the tower but it not lit, instead a LED light shines from it, managed by the coast guard. The keeper’s house has been transformed into a maritime museum, open on weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day Weekend.

Organized in 1869, Alcona County is a county in northeastern Michigan with a 2020 population of 10,167, down from 10,942 in 2010.

The largest city in Alcona County is Harrisville. Harrisville offers sunrises across Lake Huron, and not much more.

Here are the remaining cities in Alcona County:

Barton City

Black River

Curran

Glennie

Greenbush

Lincoln

Mikado

Spruce

Logger’s Trace Golf Course is one of the more popular golf courses in Alcona County. Another option if you don’t like to golf is to go to the Harrisville State Park. I’ve been here several times and it is far enough north to be much less crowded than other eastern Michigan state parks you will find several hours south in the state.

The US 23 Heritage Route goes through Alcona County. It’s a nice drive that offers some scenic views of Lake Huron.

The Alcona Brew Haus is the best place to try local beers and wines. They also have an allergen-friendly menu. A burger with kettle chips and a pickle will run you $12-$15, as of early 2022. No doubt these prices may vary, but it gives you a general idea. More than the cheapest diner, less than a boutique eatery.

Harrisville has a Dollar General, the Harrisville Harbor Grocery, The Hollyhock Emporium, a local consignment store, and The Alcona County Coffee Company. The Alcona County Coffee Company offers free wi-fi, so if you’re on vacation in the area and need to connect to the internet, it’s probably worth stopping by and getting a cup of joe.

Just north of Harrisville is Sturgeon Point Lighthouse. Sturgeon Point Lighthouse was built in 1870 and costs $3 if you want to make the climb. It is not a very tall climb, but still a pretty cool piece of Northeastern Michigan History.

The post What to do in Alcona County, Michigan first appeared on Great Lakes Experiences .

Belle Isle Lighthouse was a lighthouse that existed on the northern point of Belle Isle to guide ships through the Detroit River. It was finished in 1882, following several months of building and years of requests for appropriation. At the time, $10,000 was requested. In todays dollars, that is over $250,000. It was a square, redbrick tower with an attached, two-story domicile, which cost an additional $6000 and was built in 1883.

1877 – Head of Belle Isle, Detroit River, Michigan.—A light should be established at the northern point of Belle Isle to guide vessels into the south channel of the Detroit River, which is almost exclusively used. The reefs extending out from Isle aux Peche and Belle Isle make it difficult to strike this channel in dark nights, and a large number of vessels annually ground on one or other of these reefs. They are almost invariably compelled to call tow-boats to their assistance and are thus subjected to loss of money and time. An appropriation of $10,000 for this station is recommended.

It was near Isle aux Peches, now called Peches Island, is an uninhabitated 86 acre island owned by Canada. It is 1.2 miles (1.9 km) east of U.S.-owned Belle Isle, and 360 yards (330 m) from the Windsor shore. Measured to be 109 acres in 1965, the effects of erosion are significantly decreasing its size.

In 1941, Belle Isle Lighthouse was demolished, replaced by a $250,000 Coast Guard station.
